This gleaming white civic building houses the city's municipal corporation and is a fine example of neoclassical architecture in Chennai. Completed in the early 20th century, it presents a symmetrical facade of columns and arches crowned by a central clock tower whose bells chime across the neighbourhood. Named after a reforming colonial-era viceroy, it remains an active seat of local government. Its bright stucco exterior and stately proportions make it one of the most photographed administrative landmarks in the old part of the city.
