Ryuo Gorge, whose name means dragon king, is a scenic ravine near Nikko carved by the Kinugawa River through rock formations said to resemble the scales of a dragon. A walking trail follows the water past small waterfalls, pools, and a suspension bridge, threading through forest that turns brilliant in autumn. The gorge lies along a rail line, and a small station at one end makes it accessible for day trippers exploring beyond the famous shrines. Onsen resorts nearby draw visitors to soak after the walk.
