Fukuoka Tower rises above the seaside Momochi district and is the tallest seaside tower in Japan, its slender triangular form sheathed in thousands of mirrored panels that reflect the sky and bay. Completed in 1989 for a city exposition, it offers observation decks reached by a swift elevator, from which visitors look out over the coastline, the artificial beaches below, and the sprawling city inland. After dark the exterior becomes a canvas for seasonal light displays. The surrounding waterfront of parks and museums makes it a focal point.
