Kushida Shrine, in the old Hakata district of Fukuoka, has long been regarded as the guardian shrine of the merchant town and its people. Founded over a millennium ago, it is the spiritual home of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, held each July, when teams race through the streets bearing towering, elaborately decorated floats. One such float is displayed year-round in the precinct, giving a sense of the festival's scale. An ancient gingko tree, carved gates, and a fortune-telling stone add to the atmosphere of the shrine.
