This small strolling garden near the sumo arena centers on a tidal pond once linked to the Sumida River, whose water level shifted with the sea to change the scenery through the day. Laid out for a feudal lord in the Edo period and later owned by a wealthy financier who donated it to the city, it was rebuilt after the great earthquake. Curving paths, stone lanterns, and an arched bridge make it a peaceful pocket of greenery amid the surrounding streets, free to enter and rarely crowded even on weekends.
