The historic core of Wuhan University's campus beside East Lake, a celebrated ensemble of early republican-era buildings completed in the 1930s that blends traditional Chinese roofs with Western structural forms. Green-tiled palace-style halls, a domed library and dormitory blocks climb the wooded slopes of Luojia Hill, connected by grand stairways and framed by cherry trees that draw crowds when they bloom. The campus is regarded as one of China's most beautiful. Visitors walk the tree-lined avenues and view the lake from the hilltop terraces.
