An ancient Buddhist temple on the slopes of Hong Hill in Wuhan's Wuchang district, with a documented history stretching back more than fifteen centuries, among the oldest surviving monasteries in the region. Its halls climb the wooded hillside to a Song-style pagoda and a hall enshrining a giant bell. The peaceful, forested setting within the busy city has long made it a place of retreat, and it remains an active center of worship. Visitors ascend the tree-shaded stairways between the halls, ring the great bell and enjoy views from the pagoda.
