A large safari-style zoo in Shanghai's Pudong district, opened in 1995 as a national wildlife park where visitors ride buses through open enclosures rather than viewing animals behind bars. Drive-through zones hold lions, tigers, bears and rhinos roaming grassy paddocks, while a walking area gathers giant pandas, giraffes, kangaroos and a large aviary. Daily animal performances and feeding sessions draw families throughout the day. Visitors board the safari coaches to watch predators up close, then continue on foot among the tamer species.
