The first modern bridge to span the Yangtze River, completed in Wuhan in 1957 and long celebrated as a landmark of national engineering that linked the rail networks of northern and southern China. A double-deck steel truss carries trains on the lower level and road traffic above, stretching over a kilometre between the Snake and Tortoise hills. Massive stone-clad approach towers with pavilions frame each end. Visitors walk the pedestrian deck for river views, climb one of the towers and photograph the trains crossing below.
