A riverside promenade and district of grand colonial-era architecture along the Yangtze in Wuhan's Hankou area, developed after the port opened to foreign trade in the mid-nineteenth century. Former British, French, German, Russian and Japanese concessions left behind stone banks, trading houses, consulates and churches, many now restored along the embankment. A landscaped flood-wall park separates the buildings from the river. Visitors stroll past the historic facades, photograph the European architecture and watch ferries cross at dusk.
