A historic temple complex within the Purple Mountain scenic area east of Nanjing, celebrated for its Beamless Hall, a large vaulted brick structure built in the Ming dynasty entirely without timber beams. Nearby stands a memorial pagoda erected in the republican era to fallen soldiers, its nine storeys climbable for forest views. The wooded grounds also hold a famous echo wall and pine-shaded avenues once part of an imperial monastery. Visitors wander between the beamless sanctuary, the pagoda and forest, which glows with fireflies in summer.
