A grand octagonal auditorium in central Guangzhou built in the late 1920s to honor Sun Yat-sen, revolutionary leader and founder of modern China, on the site of his former presidential offices. Designed by architect Lü Yanzhi, it fuses a traditional blue-tiled palace roof with a vast column-free interior spanning the wide hall. Surrounded by lawns and an ancient kapok tree, it serves as a theater and civic landmark. Visitors admire the symmetrical façade, tour the memorial displays and gather in the plaza beneath a statue of Sun.
