The first privately founded museum in China after the reform era, established in the northeast of the capital by a well-known collector. Its themed galleries display Chinese furniture, ceramics, doors and gateways, jade, and other traditional crafts drawn from the founder's collection. Interpretive presentation aimed at general visitors, together with resident cats that have become a mascot, give the museum an approachable character. As a pioneering example of private cultural enterprise, it stands apart from the large state museums.
