The broad landscaped precinct in the north of the city built for the 2008 Summer Games and extended for the 2022 Winter Games. Along its central axis stand the lattice-shelled main stadium and the bubble-walled aquatics center, with a forest park, artificial lakes, and a tall observation tower to the north. The grounds continue the ancient north–south axis of the capital far beyond the old walls. Wide plazas, sculpture, and event venues make it a popular place for strolling and evening lighting displays.
