A tree-shaded east–west lane in the northeastern old city, named for the imperial academy that opens off it and distinguished by four surviving decorative timber archways spanning the roadway. These painted gateways, rare survivors within the capital, once signaled the scholarly dignity of the district. Along the lane stand the entrances to the academy and the temple of Confucius, together with small shops, tea houses, and courtyard residences. Its quiet, low-rise character makes it one of the city's most atmospheric streets.
