The former imperial academy of the capital, the highest institution of Confucian learning where scholars prepared for the civil service and emperors occasionally lectured. Founded under Mongol rule and rebuilt over later dynasties, its courtyards center on a marble-terraced hall ringed by a circular moat, an unusual layout symbolizing the spread of learning. Nearby stand rows of stone tablets carved with successful candidates' names and stones engraved with the Confucian classics. It sits beside the temple of Confucius on a quiet lane.
