The archaeological site of a medieval trading place at the head of Eyjafjörður, north of Akureyri, active from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries as the main harbour of the northern region. Grassy mounds and low walls mark the booths where visiting merchants once traded imported goods for local produce and fish. Excavations recovered coins, pottery and trade goods from across northern Europe. Each summer a living-history market recreates the medieval fair on the site, bringing the vanished commercial hub briefly back to life.
