Akureyri is Iceland's second-largest urban centre, a town of roughly 20,000 at the head of the long Eyjafjörður fjord in the north. The town is known for its botanical garden — Iceland's northernmost — and the striking modernist church designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson. It is the gateway to the Tröllaskagi Peninsula skiing area and to whale-watching in the fjord.
