Keldur

A historic farm in the south associated with the medieval sagas, preserving what is regarded as the oldest surviving turf house in the country. The main hall retains timbers dated to the twelfth century, and a secret escape tunnel from the saga age runs beneath the buildings. The complex of earth-walled rooms and a small chapel sits amid green fields below the volcanic uplands. Long the seat of a prominent saga-era family, the farm links the physical building tradition directly to the medieval literature of the island.
