This historic quarter northeast of the Vilnius old town spreads along a valley of the Neris River beneath wooded slopes. Once a district of noble villas and monasteries, it retains grand Baroque churches, a large military cemetery and stretches of old wooden housing among newer buildings. The name refers to its position on a hill, and its green setting has long made it a favoured residential area. Walkers explore its leafy streets, hillside viewpoints and religious landmarks away from the busier centre of the capital.
