This grand building beside the Esplanade park holds the largest collection of national art in Latvia, spanning painting, sculpture and works on paper. Its galleries trace Latvian and Baltic art from the eighteenth century through the twentieth, including major figures of the national school. A thorough restoration added a light-filled attic gallery and a rooftop terrace with city views. The ornate historicist architecture, with its domed hall and sculpted facade, makes the museum a landmark in its own right within Riga's cultural quarter.
