The oldest mosque in Sarajevo, the Emperor's Mosque was founded in the fifteenth century and dedicated to the Ottoman sultan whose armies established the city. Rebuilt in grander form in the sixteenth century, it sits on the south bank of the Miljacka near the historic core. A single large dome, slender minaret, and shaded courtyard with an ablution fountain mark its classical Ottoman design. As the principal royal mosque of the province, it long held a leading place in the religious and civic life of the town.
