On the outskirts of Niš stands a grim monument to the First Serbian Uprising, a stone tower built by Ottoman forces from the skulls of fallen rebels after a battle in the early nineteenth century. Intended as a warning against insurrection, it instead became a symbol of national resistance and sacrifice. A chapel later enclosed the surviving structure, where remaining skulls are still visible embedded in the masonry. Solemn and unusual among European memorials, it draws visitors reflecting on the country's struggle for independence.
