The Basilica of St. James in Levoca houses one of the most celebrated works of art in Slovakia, the towering wooden altar carved by the medieval master Pavol of Levoca in the early sixteenth century. Rising nearly nineteen metres, it is considered the tallest Gothic wooden altarpiece in the world, its central figures and reliefs crafted without a single nail. The Gothic church, set on the historic main square within the town's preserved walls, holds a wealth of side altars, frescoes, and pews. The ensemble forms the artistic heart of the town.
