Trnava is a historic town in western Slovakia known as the Slovak Rome for its unusually high concentration of churches within its preserved medieval walls. Long a centre of the archbishopric and home to an early university, it retains a compact old town of Gothic and Baroque spires, a large twin-towered cathedral, and a restored ring of fortifications with a distinctive city tower. Its pedestrian squares and religious monuments reflect centuries as a spiritual and educational hub, making it one of the country's most atmospheric centres.
