The Great Reformed Church is the largest Protestant church in Hungary and the enduring symbol of Debrecen, long known as the Calvinist Rome. Built in a Neoclassical style in the early nineteenth century, its twin towers and yellow facade dominate the main square. It holds particular national significance as the place where, in 1849, Lajos Kossuth proclaimed Hungary's independence from the Habsburgs. Inside, a plain, austere interior reflects Reformed traditions, and one tower houses the largest bell in Hungary, cast from captured cannon.
