On the outskirts of Lublin stands the preserved site of Majdanek, a German concentration and extermination camp operated during the Second World War. Because it was captured largely intact, surviving barracks, guard towers, gas chambers and a domed mausoleum holding victims' ashes remain in place, making it one of the most complete such sites. A state museum documents the history of the camp and the fate of the tens of thousands who died there. A large monument marks the entrance, and the grounds serve as a place of remembrance and education.
