The Archcathedral of Lublin is a former Jesuit church whose plain classical façade conceals an interior covered in elaborate illusionistic frescoes painted in the 18th century. These trompe-l'œil paintings create false architecture, columns and cupolas across the flat surfaces of the nave. The church is also known for its acoustic chamber, where a whisper carries clearly across the room, and for a weeping icon of the Virgin. Rebuilt after fire and war, it remains the principal church of the city.
