Gamlehaugen is a turreted mansion on the shore of a fjord arm south of central Bergen, built in the early twentieth century in a romantic castle-like style. It once belonged to a prominent Norwegian statesman and now serves as the royal family's official residence in the city. The surrounding park, laid out with lawns, ponds and waterfront paths, is open to the public and popular for walks and bathing in summer. Guided tours of selected interiors run seasonally, revealing period furnishings and decoration behind the distinctive white facade.
