The Untersberg is a striking limestone massif that rises abruptly on the border between Austria and Germany, forming the backdrop to the city of Salzburg. A cable car climbs from the suburb of Grödig to a high plateau of bare rock and Alpine meadow, from where footpaths lead to summits with sweeping views over the city, the lakes and the Alps. Its caves and legends have made it a place of folklore for centuries, with tales of an emperor sleeping within the mountain. In winter its slopes are used by walkers and ski tourers.
