This war memorial in the centre of Luxembourg City consists of a tall granite obelisk topped by a gilded bronze figure of a woman holding a laurel wreath, popularly known as the Golden Lady. Erected in 1923 to honour Luxembourgers who volunteered in the First World War, it was torn down during the German occupation and later restored to its prominent place. The monument overlooks the Pétrusse valley and has become a symbol of national resistance and freedom. It stands on the Constitution Square, a favoured viewpoint over the fortifications.
