This broad public square in the upper town of Luxembourg City serves as a civic gathering place and the site of the town hall. Known locally as the Knuedler, it takes its name from an equestrian statue of William II, who ruled as both king of the Netherlands and grand duke of Luxembourg. The square hosts open-air markets, concerts and the seasonal festivities that animate the capital. Lined with cafes and shaded by trees, it forms one of the two great open spaces at the heart of the old town.
