Standing beside the Leie river at the foot of the Saint Michael's Bridge, this large late-Gothic church was built over several centuries, though its intended great tower was never completed. Inside hangs a dramatic painting of Christ on the cross by the Antwerp master Anthony van Dyck, among other Baroque works. From the neighbouring bridge, the church forms part of a celebrated panorama taking in the row of medieval towers across the water. Its riverside position makes it one of the city's most photographed viewpoints.
