One of the largest and most historic squares in Ghent, the Friday Market has been a centre of civic life since the Middle Ages, hosting markets, public assemblies and, at times, violent uprisings by the powerful guilds. At its centre stands a statue of a medieval Flemish leader who defied foreign rule. Ringed by gabled guild houses and cafes, the square still holds a market and remains a lively meeting place. Its long association with the city's rebellious spirit gives it a special place in local memory.
