This Moorish fortress crowns a hill above the town of Antequera in the heart of Andalusia, its warm-toned ramparts and towers dating largely from the fourteenth century when it guarded the frontier of the Granada emirate. Restored in the twentieth century, its keep and battlements can be walked for panoramic views over the town's church towers, the fertile plain and the distinctive silhouette of the Peña de los Enamorados rock. A Renaissance archway links the Islamic stronghold to the Christian town that grew below.
