This immense elliptical square in Padua is one of the largest public spaces in Europe, laid out in the late 18th century on the site of a drained marsh. At its centre lies a green island ringed by a canal, itself lined by two concentric rings of statues depicting scholars, saints and notable citizens connected to the city. Small bridges cross the water to the central lawn, a favourite spot for residents to relax, and a weekly market fills the surrounding pavement.
