Padua’s fourteenth-century fresco cycles

Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel changed painting: its weeping angels and solid, breathing figures opened the door to the Renaissance a full century early. The chapel anchors a set of eight buildings across walled Padua whose fresco cycles, created between 1302 and 1397 by masters including Guariento, Giusto de' Menabuoi and Altichiero, chart how mural art learned space and emotion within a single century. UNESCO inscribed Padua's fourteenth-century fresco cycles as World Heritage in 2021.
