The Sendlinger Tor is one of the surviving medieval gates of Munich's former city wall, marking the southern entrance to the historic centre. Built in the fourteenth century as part of the second ring of fortifications, it originally had a tall central tower flanked by two smaller towers, of which the flanking towers remain while the centre was later opened into a wide archway for traffic. Today it forms a busy square and transit hub, its brick towers a reminder of the city's defensive past amid the modern streets.
