Hellabrunn Zoo, set along the Isar river in southern Munich, opened in 1911 and is regarded as the world's first geozoo, arranging its animals by continent of origin. Spread across wooded parkland in the Isar floodplain, it houses several thousand animals representing hundreds of species, from elephants and gorillas to polar bears and native alpine wildlife. Landscaped enclosures aim to recreate natural habitats, and the zoo runs international breeding programmes for endangered species. A large aviary and aquarium round out the collections.
