The Olympiapark was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics and remains a major venue for sport, concerts, and recreation in northern Munich. Its most celebrated feature is the sweeping tent-like roof of acrylic glass panels suspended on steel cables, designed to evoke the Alps and to project openness after the country's wartime past. The park includes a stadium, swimming hall, and an artificial hill formed from wartime rubble. A tall observation tower rises above the grounds, and the site memorialises the athletes killed in the 1972 attack.
