This graceful semicircular square fronts the former ducal palace and forms the ceremonial heart of Dijon. Laid out in the late seventeenth century in a sweeping arc of arcaded stone facades, it was designed to frame an equestrian statue of the reigning king. The arcades now shelter cafes and shops, while modern ground-level fountains animate the paving. Its harmonious classical design, curving toward the palace, makes it one of the most elegant urban set-pieces in Burgundy.
