On the western edge of Dijon stand the remains of a Carthusian monastery founded by a duke of Burgundy as a dynastic burial place. Though most of the complex was destroyed after the Revolution, two remarkable sculptural works survive: a monumental carved well surrounded by prophet figures, and an ornate church portal. These masterpieces of late-medieval sculpture reveal the artistic ambition of the Burgundian court. Set within the grounds of a later hospital, the site preserves a poignant fragment of the dukes' vanished splendour.
