Once a jousting ground in the medieval city, this square in the heart of Rennes is now famous for hosting one of the largest food markets in France each Saturday morning. Framed by grand seventeenth-century mansions and two ornate covered market halls, it draws crowds of shoppers to hundreds of stalls of Breton produce. Outside market hours the square is a lively spot for cafes and events. Its blend of noble townhouses and bustling commerce reflects centuries of the city's social life.
