Officially named for a hero of the city's resistance, this broad central square is the social heart of Lille, framed by richly decorated Flemish facades. At its centre a column crowned by a goddess commemorates the townspeople's defence against a siege. The square blends architectural styles across the centuries, from ornate gabled houses to grand nineteenth-century commercial buildings. Ringed by cafes and bookshops and often hosting markets and events, it captures the northern city's lively public spirit.
