In the Bercy district, this institution devoted to the preservation and celebration of cinema occupies a striking building designed by the architect Frank Gehry, its irregular limestone forms once housing an American cultural centre. It safeguards one of the world's largest film archives, founded by the pioneering collector Henri Langlois, and screens rare and restored films in its cinemas. A museum traces the history of moving images with cameras, costumes, sets and memorabilia for cinephiles and scholars.
