On the Left Bank of the Seine facing the Place de la Concorde, this palace is the seat of the French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament. Originally built in the 18th century for a daughter of Louis XIV, it was later fitted with a grand classical portico of columns intended to mirror the church of the Madeleine across the river. Behind the colonnade lie a semicircular debating chamber, ceremonial halls and a library decorated by the painter Eugène Delacroix. The building embodies French republican government.
