Set beneath the slopes of Salisbury Crags near the foot of the Royal Mile, this science centre tells the story of the planet from the Big Bang to the present day. Opened in 1999 within a tent-like translucent structure, it uses immersive galleries, simulators and a planetarium to explore geology, oceans, polar ice and life on Earth. Visitors can experience a mock earthquake, feel polar temperatures and walk through a tropical rainforest. Its location beside the Scottish Parliament makes it a popular family destination.
