Santiago de Compostela (Old Town)

Every year pilgrims still walk weeks across Spain to reach the tomb of St James, just as they have for a thousand years. Santiago de Compostela, sacked by Muslim forces at the close of the 10th century and rebuilt through the 11th, became a symbol of Christian Spain; its old town gathers Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque splendour around the cathedral, whose carved Pórtico de la Gloria is one of medieval sculpture's masterpieces. UNESCO listed the Old Town in 1985.
