The Reka River vanishes underground at Škocjan and thunders through some six kilometres of passages more than 200 metres deep — past waterfalls and one of the largest underground chambers ever surveyed. The surrounding Kras region gave karst science its very name, and these Slovenian caves, with their collapsed dolines, remain a world reference for the study of such phenomena. UNESCO inscribed the system in 1986.
