Emperor Galerius built himself a palace in his homeland of eastern Serbia at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries and named it Felix Romuliana after his mother Romula. Within powerful fortifications stood temples, basilicas, baths and a tetrapylon, an ensemble unusual for fusing ceremony with commemoration — emperor and mother were honoured at the adjoining memorial complex. UNESCO inscribed Gamzigrad-Romuliana in 2007.
